A deaf Indiana man was killed in what his family believes was a violent road rage incident, leading to murder charges against two individuals, according to police.

On May 2, Indiana State Police arrested Andre Briski, 24, of Indianapolis, and Shawna Rowland, 23, of Greenwood, in connection with the May 1 shooting death of 35-year-old Ryan Hawkins. The arrest followed several 911 calls reporting a possible shooting and a car swerving off I-65 northbound into a pond.

First responders arrived to find Hawkins lying unconscious in the grass, where he was later pronounced dead. Investigators determined that his Hyundai Elantra had veered into a nearby pond and sunk close to where his body was found. Indiana State Police SCUBA divers quickly responded to search the submerged vehicle and confirmed it was empty.

The investigation revealed that shots were allegedly fired from another vehicle at Hawkins’ car before it crashed. Hawkins suffered a gunshot wound and injuries from being ejected from the car. Bullet holes were discovered in the submerged vehicle, leading authorities to believe the shooting was the cause of the crash.

Hawkins’ family told WISH-TV they believe the incident started with a “honking incident,” prompting Hawkins to try to escape from a Ford Explorer. Witnesses reported that as Hawkins attempted to flee, the Ford Explorer pulled alongside his car, and someone inside began shooting.

Later that night, detectives located the Ford Explorer, which led them to Briski and Rowland. Briski was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. He allegedly admitted to police that Hawkins was “brake-checking” him, causing Briski to fear a crash. “I’ll tell you right here, I did it,” Briski reportedly confessed, though he claimed it was unintentional.

Hawkins’ family is devastated by his death. His brother, Drew Hawkins, shared that Ryan had a special connection with everyone, especially within the deaf community, describing him as a “beautiful soul.”

The Deaf sports community is mourning the loss of Dwayne Woodard, a dedicated and respected figure in the Eastern Athletic Association of the Deaf (EAAD) and a lifelong supporter of Deaf basketball. Known for his passion for the game, leadership on and off the court, and unwavering commitment to his teammates, friends, and family, Dwayne’s legacy will be remembered for years to come.

Dwayne faced one of life’s toughest battles with remarkable courage. He was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (MM), a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer that affects plasma cells in the bone marrow. Despite the physical and emotional toll of his illness, he continued to embody the same determination and spirit that defined his career and community work.

On February 18, 2021, Dwayne’s courageous fight came to an end. His passing leaves a deep void, not only in the Deaf basketball community but in the lives of those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his devoted wife and two beloved children, who will carry forward his memory and the values he lived by.

For decades, Dwayne was a proud representative of Deaf athletics, participating in numerous events and inspiring younger athletes through his sportsmanship, mentorship, and dedication. He was a long-time member of EAAD and a familiar face at tournaments, where he celebrated not just the wins, but the camaraderie and connections forged through the game. His presence brought energy, motivation, and unity to the court.

Dwayne’s passion for basketball was deeply connected to his time at Gallaudet University, where he was both a student and an athlete. The relationships and experiences he built there shaped his approach to teamwork, discipline, and leadership—qualities he carried into every aspect of his life.

His fight against Multiple Myeloma also became a rallying point for friends, family, and supporters, many of whom used the hashtag #FCKCancer to show solidarity and raise awareness about the disease. His story continues to inspire advocacy for cancer research and early detection, particularly within the Deaf community.

The outpouring of love and tributes following his passing is a testament to the impact Dwayne made. From heartfelt messages on social media to shared memories at games, it’s clear that his influence extended far beyond the basketball court.

Dwayne Woodard’s life was a powerful example of resilience, passion, and community spirit. His legacy will continue to inspire Deaf athletes and advocates for years to come.
